MÚSICA ANTIGUA
EDUARDO PANIAGUA, musical direction

Medieval music in Oslo’s oldest church

Under the festival theme “East of Western church music”, Eduardo Paniagua and Música Antigua present an exciting program connected with the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba and the building’s history, which encompasses both early church communities and Muslim and Catholic sanctuary. Centuries of different religious and architectural activity have made the building into a cultural melting pot, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Much of the music chosen for this concert, has previously been used for night tours in the Mosque-Cathedral. Eduardo Paniagua presents melodies and songs from the 8th until the 17th centuries: a musical selection illustrating several centuries of architecture and prayer.

  • Música Antigua has specialised in Spanish medieval music. The singers and instrumentalists present music from the multi-cultural Spain – with Christianity, Islam, and Judaism as a backdrop. Their recordings of Andalusian music have garnered excellent reviews internationally. They have become renowned both for their artistic quality and for the important work of preserving the Spanish-Arabian musical heritage from the Middle Ages.

  • Eduardo Paniagua is a Spanish musician, conductor, and architect. He has specialised in Spanish medieval music and founded the ensembles Cálamus and Andalucía. Paniagua’s discography numbers more than 160 recordings. In other words, he is an extremely active and creative artist. He has received dozens of awards and accolades, among them Premio Música Clásica by Academia de la Música de España, the Ibn Arabí-Barzaj award in 2019, and a prize from the Four Sephardic Synagogues in Jerusalem in 2012.
