THE ETERNAL DUALISM
LECTURE ON ARVO PÄRT AND HIS MUSIC
EMIL BERNHARDT, LECTURER
Arvo Pärt is one of the most-performed composers of our time. For a number of years he has sought an ideal of simplicity in his musical expression, known as tintinnabuli (Latin for small bells). For Pärt, tintinnabuli symbolises the eternal dualism: darkness and light, body and spirit, earth and heaven, humanity and God.
Emil Bernhardt, music critic in the newspaper Morgenbladet and fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Music, lectures on this multifaceted and creative composer and his aesthetic universe. The lecture is held on the occasion of the concert with Polyphony, one of Arvo Pärt's favourite ensembles.
