Catholic evensong at St. Dominikus Church

In cooperation with St. Dominikus Vokalensemble, the Church Music Festival welcomes festival goers to Catholic Mass in St. Dominikus Church. Vespers (evening) is the day's second last prayer service. This service has a traditional and stringent development with Gregorian chants, hymns and other Latin texts as the main ingredients. St. Dominikus Vokalensemble will emphasize the Gregorian aspect and perform original Gregorian compositions in reworked form as well as new Gregorian music composed by choir leader and conductor Jo Hegle Sjøflot. The Monastery's Prior, Arnfinn Haram, will preside at the Mass and Otto Christian Odland will play the organ.

St. Dominikus Vokalensemble was founded in 2009 to support the liturgy in the Catholic St. Dominic Monastery at Majorstuen in Oslo. The music the vocal ensemble performs is mainly composed by choir leader Jo Hegle Sjøflot and reflects influences from Gregorian chant, polyphonic medieval music and Renaissance polyphony, all adapted to the church's liturgy. St. Dominikus Vokalensemble is a mixed choir that performs in two main groups, a three-voice and a six-voice variant.

Jo Hegle Sjøflot has studied musicology and theology. His path to classical music was through the flute, which led him further to the piano, saxophone and composition. Sjøflot has worked actively with rhythmic and improvised music, as a performer, arranger and songwriter. He has been trained in Gregorian music by experts at the Lunden and St. Dominikus monasteries. Sjøflot currently works full-time as a composer.
